What are employer obligations for lone workers in NZ?

If your lone worker is incapacitated in a New Zealand remote site, a policy document cannot call for help.
Distance is not the risk; being unreachable is. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA), your obligation is to ensure the health and safety of your workers so far as is reasonably practicable, regardless of whether they are alone.

Liability lives in the gap between a written plan and an actual rescue
The HSWA 2015 requires you to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement active controls for anyone isolated by time, location, or nature of work. You must provide adequate training, establish clear procedures for regular contact, and consult with your employees and HSRs to ensure these systems actually work in the field.

The dangerous reliance on mobile phone apps and emergency beacons
What we consistently see across New Zealand is the “compliance illusion”—having a policy on paper but relying on mobile phone apps that fail in cellular dead zones. Many organisations mistakenly treat PLBs as lone worker solutions, but these are one-way distress signals that lack the check-in capability and No-Motion Alerts essential for active monitoring.

Genuine protection requires connectivity that doesn’t quit
Real safety means deploying purpose-built cellular or satellite wearables that are always in ready mode for an instant SOS. To meet your duty of care, your system must include No-Motion Alerts and a reliable communication link to a professional monitoring centre, ensuring that a failure to check-in triggers an immediate response.
