What is a lone worker in NZ?

A worker who is unreachable during a crisis is a liability, not just a statistic.
In New Zealand, lone work is defined by the risk of isolation—where a worker is out of sight or sound of others and cannot be immediately assisted. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA), this isolation creates a critical vulnerability that must be managed to prevent fatalities.

Isolation is a risk that must be managed, not ignored
Under the HSWA 2015, New Zealand PCBUs have a legal obligation to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of all workers. This means identifying every role where a person works alone or remotely and implementing active controls to mitigate the risk of an unassisted emergency.

A policy document cannot call for help
Many New Zealand organisations rely on “check-in” policies or mobile phone apps that fail the moment a worker enters a cellular dead zone. When you rely on a phone in a remote area, your safety system is only as good as the nearest cell tower, leaving a dangerous gap between your written policy and your worker’s actual survival chances.

True protection requires active monitoring, not passive hope
Genuine safety involves purpose-built cellular or satellite wearables capable of Fall Detection and No-Motion Alerts, linked to a professional monitoring centre. For workers in New Zealand’s rugged terrain, satellite connectivity is the only way to ensure an SOS actually reaches a responder when cellular networks fail.
