How to create a lone worker policy in NZ?

A policy document cannot call for help when a worker is unconscious in a remote New Zealand valley.
Your written procedures are only as effective as the technology that enforces them. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA), you are legally required to manage the risks of lone work so far as is reasonably practicable.

Your legal duty is to manage risk, not just document it
The HSWA 2015 requires you to consult with your employees, sharing information and giving them a reasonable opportunity to express their views on lone worker hazards. Whether your policy is a stand-alone document or part of a general safety manual, it must be a living document that is regularly revised to meet the actual needs of your workers.

The fatal flaw: relying on a policy without the technology to back it up
What we consistently see in New Zealand is a dangerous gap between a “paper policy” and real-world protection. Many organisations rely on a mobile phone app in areas where cellular coverage is non-existent, or mistakenly treat PLBs as lone worker solutions despite their lack of check-in capabilities and No-Motion Alerts.

Real safety requires active monitoring and fail-safe hardware
Genuine protection means deploying purpose-built cellular wearables for urban environments and satellite devices for remote zones where mobile signals fail. Your policy should mandate the use of devices capable of triggering a No-Motion Alert and connecting directly to a professional monitoring centre to ensure help is dispatched even if the worker is incapacitated.
