Does someone working alone in an office count as a lone worker?

A locked office door doesn’t stop a medical emergency or a security breach.
In both Australia and New Zealand, a worker is considered “alone” or “isolated” whenever they cannot be seen or heard by another person and cannot expect a visit. Whether it is an office cleaner working after hours or a manager in a remote branch, the risk remains: if they collapse or face violence, they are unreachable.

Your duty of care doesn’t stop at the office door
Under the WHS Act 2011 in Australia and the HSWA 2015 in New Zealand, PCBUs must provide a workplace that is safe and free from risks to health, including psychological health. This legal obligation extends to those working in isolation, requiring employers to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement effective communication systems for emergencies.

A policy on paper cannot call for help
Many organisations mistakenly believe an office environment is “low risk” and rely on a Mobile Phone App or a written check-in policy. In our experience, this creates a dangerous gap; a phone left on a desk during a fall or a missed check-in that goes unnoticed for hours leaves the worker unprotected and the organisation exposed to significant liability.

Real protection requires active, wearable monitoring
Genuine safety means moving beyond passive policies to active systems, such as cellular wearable devices that provide one-press SOS capability and No-Motion Alerts. For those in areas with spotty reception, a Cellular + Satellite solution ensures the worker is never truly isolated, regardless of the building’s architecture or location.
