● Man Down

What is a man-down alarm, and is it required under NZ health and safety law?

An unconscious worker is a silent worker, and silence is where liability begins in New Zealand.
If a worker collapses or is incapacitated, they cannot call for help. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA), New Zealand PCBUs must manage these risks to ensure worker safety so far as is reasonably practicable.

The ‘Reasonably Practicable’ Standard Under HSWA 2015
NZ law does not explicitly mandate a specific piece of hardware, but it does mandate the outcome of safety. If your risk assessment identifies that a worker could be incapacitated and unable to signal for help, implementing a No-Motion Alert (often referred to as a man-down alarm) becomes a reasonably practicable control to meet your legal obligations.

The Deadly Reliance on Mobile Apps and Manual Check-ins
Many organisations rely on mobile phone apps or check-in schedules, but these are 0% effective in areas without cellular coverage. We consistently see a dangerous gap where a missed check-in leads to chaos—you don’t know if your worker is simply in a dead zone or lying injured, leaving you to coordinate emergency responses based on guesswork.

Integrating No-Motion Alerts with Guaranteed Connectivity
Genuine protection requires a purpose-built wearable featuring Fall Detection and No-Motion Alerts that trigger automatically when a worker stops moving. For workers in remote areas, this must be paired with Satellite or Cellular + Satellite connectivity to ensure the alert actually reaches a monitoring centre, regardless of mobile coverage.
