Does Spark or One NZ have enough mobile coverage for lone worker safety?

A ‘no signal’ icon is a failure of protection when your worker is injured in a remote New Zealand valley.
Relying solely on cellular providers like Spark or One NZ creates dangerous blind spots in your safety net. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA) in New Zealand, PCBUs must manage risks to ensure worker safety so far as is reasonably practicable—and ‘no coverage’ is a predictable risk in NZ’s geography.

Your Duty of Care Doesn’t End Where the Signal Stops
The HSWA 2015 requires you to have effective communication systems in place for lone workers. If your worker enters a cellular black spot, a mobile phone app or cellular-only device becomes useless, leaving you exposed to significant liability and your worker without a lifeline.

Coverage Maps are Not Safety Plans
Many organisations make the mistake of trusting provider coverage maps or assuming a mobile phone app is sufficient. In our experience, a significant percentage of lone workers operate outside reliable cellular coverage at least some of the time, meaning a policy that relies on a SIM card is a policy that fails in the field.

Total Connectivity Requires Satellite Redundancy
Genuine protection means ensuring communication is possible regardless of the terrain. We have seen regional council clients in New Zealand adopt satellite-connected devices on the Iridium network to ensure 100% communication capability. For many, the safest approach is a strategy using cellular wearables for day-to-day use and satellite devices for any work leaving cellular coverage.
