What are the risks of lone working in NZ?

In New Zealand, the risk isn’t just the environment—it’s the silence that follows an accident.
From remote field sites to city-based hotels, lone workers face a spectrum of threats including workplace violence, hazardous substance exposure, and sudden medical emergencies. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA), these aren’t just operational hazards; they are critical liabilities for any PCBU.

“Reasonably Practicable” is a mandate, not a loophole
The HSWA 2015 requires you to eliminate risks to workers wherever possible, or minimise them if elimination isn’t feasible. In our experience, this means implementing control measures that are proportionate to the risk—whether that is managing the volatility of a lone worker in a retail setting or the isolation of a technician in a remote valley.

Your policy document cannot call for help
We consistently see New Zealand organisations rely on mobile phone apps in regions with spotty cellular coverage or treat PLBs as lone worker solutions. These gaps are dangerous; a mobile phone app is useless in a dead zone, and a PLB cannot trigger a No-Motion Alert for an unconscious worker, leaving your organisation exposed and your worker stranded.

Protection means guaranteed visibility
Genuine safety requires technology that matches the geography, utilizing cellular devices for urban areas and satellite technology for remote locations. This must be integrated with a professional monitoring centre capable of detecting a No-Motion Alert and initiating a rescue when the worker cannot.

Guardian Angel Safety: Turning Policy Into Real Protection
For over 12 years, we have helped Australian and New Zealand organisations move beyond paperwork to deploy 24/7 professional monitoring and satellite-connected devices. We convert complex compliance obligations into working infrastructure so your workers are never truly alone.
