● Risk Assessment & Planning

How do I create a lone worker risk assessment in New Zealand?

A risk assessment that only lives in a folder won’t save a worker in a dead zone.
In New Zealand, the gap between your written assessment and your actual response time is where the danger lives. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA), you are legally required to manage these risks actively, not just document them.

Failure to eliminate risk is a breach of your duty
Under the HSWA 2015, New Zealand PCBUs must ensure the health and safety of workers so far as is reasonably practicable. This requires you to eliminate risks where possible and implement proportionate controls—and crucially, you must involve your workers in the conversation, as they are the eyes and ears of your business.

A policy document cannot call for help
What we consistently see across our client engagements is that organisations have a policy on paper but no technology to back it up. Relying on mobile phone apps in no-coverage zones or treating emergency beacons as lone worker solutions creates a false sense of security and leaves your organisation exposed to significant liability.

Controls must match the environment, not the budget
Genuine protection means deploying technology that matches the risk: cellular wearables for urban areas and satellite devices for remote regions. You need automated features like No-Motion Alerts to trigger a response when a worker is incapacitated, connected directly to a professional monitoring centre.
