What are the lone worker safety risks for NZ community healthcare workers doing home visits?

A home visit is a workplace you do not control, and in New Zealand, that lack of control can be fatal.
When a healthcare worker enters a private residence, they are exposed to unpredictable violence, medical emergencies, and environmental hazards. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA), the responsibility to manage these risks falls squarely on the PCBU.

Your duty of care does not end at the clinic door
The HSWA 2015 requires NZ businesses to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of all workers. This means you must implement control measures proportionate to the risk, including effective ways to investigate and deal with violence when it occurs.

A check-in text is not a safety system
What we consistently see in community health is a reliance on mobile phone apps or manual “I’m safe” texts. These fail the moment a worker is incapacitated or enters a cellular dead zone, leaving the organisation with a dangerous gap between their written policy and actual worker protection.

Protection that works when the worker cannot
Genuine protection requires purpose-built cellular wearable devices that allow for an immediate SOS press and include No-Motion Alerts for medical emergencies. In rural New Zealand, where cellular coverage is unreliable, satellite-connected devices are the only way to ensure a worker remains reachable.
