How do you manage fall risk for people working alone at height?

A fall from height when working alone is rarely just an injury—it is a race against time that the worker usually loses.
In Australia and New Zealand, the distance of the fall is often less critical than the time it takes for someone to realise the worker is incapacitated. Whether operating under the WHS Act 2011 (AU) or the HSWA 2015 (NZ), the failure to detect a fall instantly turns a rescue mission into a recovery operation.

Elimination is the only absolute protection under the law
Across both jurisdictions, PCBUs and employers are legally required to eliminate the risk of falling first—such as by designing work to be performed at ground level. Where elimination is not practicable, the law demands a hierarchy of controls: first isolating the worker via edge protection or total restraint systems, and only then using fall arrest PPE to minimise harm.

A policy on paper cannot detect a fall
What we consistently see is a dangerous reliance on scheduled check-in calls or mobile phone apps. If a worker falls and is rendered unconscious, they cannot answer a phone or trigger a manual SOS, rendering “check-in” policies useless. This gap between a written safety manual and real-time detection is where significant liability and tragedy reside.

Genuine protection requires automated, wearable detection
True safety integrates hardware capable of Fall Detection and No-Motion Alerts that trigger automatically when a worker stops moving. Depending on the site, this requires Cellular or Satellite connectivity to ensure the alert reaches a monitoring centre, as a device is only as effective as the network it uses to call for help.
