Do I need to provide lone worker alarms under Australian WHS laws?

A policy document cannot call for help when a worker is unconscious in a remote gully.
In Australia and New Zealand, the risk isn’t the isolation itself—it’s being unreachable during a crisis. Under the WHS Act 2011 (AU) and HSWA 2015 (NZ), the law doesn’t mandate a specific brand of alarm, but it does mandate that you manage the risks of isolation.

Your duty of care demands effective communication, not just a checklist
Australian WHS laws place a clear duty on PCBUs to ensure the safety of workers who are isolated by time, location, or the nature of their work. You are required to identify hazards and implement appropriate controls, which includes ensuring a reliable means of communication for workers who cannot be seen or heard by others.

The dangerous gap between “policy” and “protection”
What we consistently see is a reliance on mobile phone apps or manual check-in schedules that fail the moment a worker leaves cell coverage. An app is 0% effective in a dead zone, and treating one-way emergency beacons (PLBs/EPIRBs) as lone worker solutions leaves you without No-Motion Alerts or professional monitoring.

Genuine protection requires hardware that works everywhere
Real safety means moving beyond the phone to purpose-built cellular wearable devices that are always in ready mode. For remote areas, this requires satellite-connected devices or Cellular + Satellite solutions like the Blackline G7X to ensure a distress signal actually reaches a monitoring centre regardless of mobile coverage.
